"Not without my team." Cycling to work together.

A bicycle community at work combines health, team spirit, and sustainable mobility—and turns the daily commute into an enriching communal experience. Cycling together not only improves your fitness, but also communication, trust, and team spirit before the first meeting of the day.

Why start a bike community?

Three people are riding bikes on a bike path under a cloudy sky, all equipped with backpacks.

Cycling to work in a group offers significant advantages over cycling alone: motivation remains consistently high, even in bad weather or during stressful periods. Studies show that cyclists take fewer days off sick on average – a clear benefit for both employees and companies alike.

In addition, joint trips create new connections between departments, communication becomes more informal, and the sense of team spirit is strengthened. The relaxed atmosphere of cycling breaks down hierarchies and creates space for open exchange and creative ideas.

Finding the optimal team size

Basic rules for harmonious coexistence

Common meeting points and fixed times form the foundation of a functioning cycling community. Define clear but flexible departure times and determine central meeting points that are easily accessible for everyone.

The pace is set by the slowest person – this is an unwritten law of successful cycling groups. Changing slipstream positions and mutual consideration strengthen the sense of community and ensure that no one is left behind.

Establish a culture of communication: a quick check via WhatsApp group about weather conditions, route changes, or spontaneous cancellations keeps everyone up to date.

The right accessories are just as important for successful commuting as the bike itself. For example, extra Mudguards for your mountain bike to keep you clean in wet weather. Or a smartphone holder that makes navigation easy. Leasing these items saves you money and makes your ride more comfortable. Motivational strategies for long-term success

Setting common goals boosts motivation: 1,000 km as a team by the end of the year or 20 days of cycling to work, as in the ADFC campaign "Cycle to work." These challenges create commitment and a sense of achievement.

Internal competitions between different cycling groups within the company encourage ambition: Who cycles the most elevation gain? Which team saves the most CO₂? Successes should be made visible – through shared apps, bulletin boards in the office, or short updates on the intranet.

Points-based reward programs can create additional incentives: kilometers collected are converted into bonuses or vouchers for bicycle accessories.

Plan events and promotions

A team breakfast after joint rides brings people together and provides an opportunity for relaxed conversation. Organize participation in local bike tours or plan company bike rides on the weekend—these events strengthen team spirit beyond the everyday work environment.
Photo contests featuring the most beautiful team rides, joint challenges, and workshops on topics such as roadworthiness and sustainable commuting make the cycling community a vibrant part of the corporate culture.

Inspiration from practice
